DIY Meade 505 Telescope to PC Cable

DIY Telescope Control Cable LXD-55

Most of my readers here will be surprised to learn that I am an avid amateur astronomer. I spend every chance I get under the stars taking in the amazing views that can be seen from my 10" Meade LXD-55 Schmidt Newtonian. With my background in photography, it should come as no surprise that I have shifted more into astrophotography than visual observing. My imaging sessions are usually conducted with two of my best friends at a private observatory owned by one of them . The observatory is nice but it is located about 35-40 minutes from me and thus I do not get out there as much as I would like to. So over the last couple of months I have been gearing up my scope for imaging. One of the first task I had to tackle was building a cable that would allow me to control my telescope from my PC, and that is what today's tutorial is all about.  [node:read-more:link]

INEO USB 3.0 HDD / SSD Docking Station

INEO I-NA320U+ HDD Docking StationLet’s face it most of us are computer geeks who have multiple hard drives just sitting around doing nothing. Some of us use of hard drives backup and some of us have yet to find a use for them because installing them back into our computers takes time. Luckily hard drive docking stations have been around for years. I have had the fortune to review several different brands over the past three years. Today I’m going to take a look at the I-NA321U+, which is by far the most impressive hard drive dock I have reviewed to date. [node:read-more:link]

We don't usually cover kickstarter projects, but when we do it is for something we love!

We get several request a week to asking us to cover various kickstarter projects and we usually just file them in chapter 13 because if we posted every one we received, we would become nothing but a kickstarter aggregator. We made an exception this time because this kickstarter is something we are very close to. SpacePRIDE is a team founded in 2010 to compete in the NASA Centennial Challenge - Sample Return Rover. In the 2012 competition, they built three rovers to compete with in a span of 7 months. They are doing it again this year for the 2013 competition, but this year they are starting from the ground up and building four rovers to compete with and they need your help! Check out their Kickstarter and continue reading after the jump for more information!  [node:read-more:link]

Review: ISO-TIP 7710 Soldering Tool Kit

ISO-TIP Model 7710 Soldering Kit
Soldering is most definitely a skill one needs to possess to further their pursuit into the DIY electronics hobby. Have a good soldering station greatly improves one's ability to solder. Unfortunately most decent soldering stations are a pain to move from your bench to access remote projects. Over the years there have been many companies who tried to solve this problem. Some offer portable irons that are fueled by natural gas, others of approach the the issue with battery-powered irons.

ISO-Tip sends their love in the form of their latest portable soldering iron kit.

Hack A Day posted an article about making sure your data was backed up and used our home / workshop fire as an example on how to do things right. We lost no important code because our data is backed up in the cloud.  After that post we got many emails offering condolences and well wishes on starting over. A few people donated money, some donated tools, and some companies stepped up and offered to send us some amazing hardware. ISO-TIP was the first of those companies to contact us. They emailed us and asked if we could make use of a portable soldering iron. Being Iron-less we replied with a resounding YES! [node:read-more:link]

INEO USB 3.0 HDD / SSD Docking Station + Cloner stops by for a visit!

INEO I-NA321U+

Our site owner Charles Gantt has worked with INEO in the past reviewing a few of their USB External HDD enclosures, and when they heard that we were getting into the PC hardware review game they jumped at the chance to send us our first review item. The INEO I-NA321U+ USB 3.0 HDD Cloning and Docking Station is a pretty cool product. and we can't wait to run some benchmarks to see how well it performs. What makes the I-NA321U+ unique is its HDD/SSD cloning feature. It can clone Hard Drives and SSDs without the aid of a PC and all it takes is the push of a button.

We need your help to finish rebuilding our workshop.

Tweet This:

As most of our long time readers know, we lost our home and workshop in a devastating fire in July of 2012. We have since moved in to another home but rebuilding our workshop has been moving at a snail’s pace. I really would love to see the new workshop have an active fab space with a small Laser cutter, small CNC mill and a few 3d printers so we can bring you even more awesome content. At the moment we are saving up to purchase a cheap Rigol Oscilloscope and a new motherboard for our bench dev box. We applied for a kick starter and was turned down as they deemed what we want as charity case and thus violates the TOS of kickstarter. So we looked into other crowd funding resources and nothing seemed to fit what we were asking. So we decided to put up a Chip-in widget. [node:read-more:link]
